About
The driving force behind my art is about finding an appropriate object to relate contemplative experience.
Amy Mishkin- Chavez began her artistic career in early childhood by drawing on pretty much everything. By doing so, she made distinct connections to her environment and clearly identified her desire to “make her mark” on the world! Whether natural or industrial, Amy continues to use a more refined and introspective approach to making connections with found objects. Her signature style comes from a sincere approach to infuse metaphor with exact replication, impeccable craftsmanship and overall whimsical experimentation. The freedom gained by creating with multiple ...

Ahhh the Archives! Here are some examples of work I've made in the last 7 years. Some series are still ongoing and make cameo appearances! Keep your eyes peeled for secret codes and clues!
Dream Homes
One of the longest on going series of my life...It started in my childhood when I began having frequent dreams of flying- often over roof tops and neighborhoods. Much later in college, I began to have some great opportunities to travel and often explored residential architecture amazed to actually see what I had dreamed about as a child! I later embarked on a decade long journey of constant travel and realized that my "Dream Home" could be wherever I wanted - in the palm of my hand, or in my pocket!
These gems have two categories, Original Dream Homes and Custom ...
Installations
Transforming space is a natural aspect of my creativity and the biggest influence I have is Nature itself. Time consuming, challenging and humbling, these works helped me celebrate significant changes in my life.
1974-
Not to be overly morbid but I am curious about epitaphs. What will mine say? How could I possibly be described in 40 characters or less? Just Kidding. Life is like a roller coaster, full of ups and downs, blind curves and dark tunnels. We shift where we want to sit. The intensity in which we experience our life's ride is individual yet overall, we universally ride together and share the same joys, fears, anticipations and curiosities.
This installation was created to honor the passing of my beloved grandmother. She taught me a lot about "riding life" rather than just living ...
Familial Propulsion
The propeller is a conduit for exploration. The use of propellers as a personal metaphor highlights the cyclical nature of movement between experiences. The propeller’s energy carries us forward, upward, sideways, backwards and even upside down. I created this body of work as I launched into the most significant experience of my life, motherhood. In hindsight, I ask myself why not re-purpose and paint on found objects? The answer is this: Working with clay is an ideal medium for me in expressing organic change, as clay itself has a life. Clay needs nurturing. It needs time to mature and become ...
Road Work
Moving back to a city that now seemed constantly under construction made navigating refuge and hazards more...complicated. I began building new relationships and fixing up old ones. It felt a lot like the first day of school only now I was an adult and driving. Speed bumps, blockades and natural disruptions inspired me to take a closer look at personal metaphor. What had I developed in terms of coping skills and communication tools? How could I express my "road work"? It started with daily reflections documented by sculpting.

Sculptures
Within my own work is a kind of swelling of possibilities, a freedom-laced, mystifying, and essentially spiritual path. I get my greatest sense of direction--a connection to the divine--when I am working with clay, transforming raw into refined.

Serendipity. Not really knowing why I was building these large stoneware vessels but riding the waves of subconscious influence, I completed the series of "Hold and Carry" before I learned I was pregnant!

Anchor and Buoys
Buoys and Anchors are symbolic markings of change, caution and stability. These pieces explore the idea of emotional navigation when faced with the absurdly unfamiliar.

Scales
Scales are cool tools that measure the weight of anything! Weighing the intensity of one experience or another is a daily activity for me. I thought it would be fun to explore this concept more inuitively with clay and glaze, antique styles and unusual pairings.

Sea Vessels
The way is not in the waves; the rhythmic ups and downs, calm tides and torrents. The way is in the heart. For the traveler who knows her direction, there is always a favorable wind.
Most recently I’ve found a metaphorical connection with shipping vessels… carriers of what is precious. Personally, the "cargo" then signifies my son, my mission as an educator, my cache of memories and true self. The varying perspectives I have of role, my cargo and experiences are affected by disproportionate shapes and seismic circumstances - the vessel, the cargo and the forces of life.
